Jan Delay, an artist who is famous for his nasal voice with a distinctive design. He is one of the founders of German music in the 1990’s. `Delay Lama´ like he is also called, became famous as a part of the formation `Beginner´ in the middle of the 90’s. Since his reggae interpretation of the song `Irgendwie. Irgendwo, irgendwann´ from `Nena´, he was in our minds and hearts and we couldn’t get enough of him. In the year 2001 he produced his first solo album `Searching for the Jan Soul Rebels´ in cooperation with `Sam Ragga Band´. 5 years later with his second album `Mercedes-Dance´ he finally had international success. The album landed on the top of the German ranking and in the top 10 ranking of the Austrian charts. The album was in cooperation with the band `Disko No. 1´.
This year Jan Delay and `Disko No. 1´ produced a new album `Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul´. From the release it was one of the top sellers and that’s not only because of the Hitsingle `Oh Johnny´.
The concert at the `Bank Austria Hall´ in Vienna was sold out and one of the highlights in autumn 2009.
When the drums start to play nearly nobody was standing still. From the beginning Jan Delay was playing with the crowd. `Hello Vienna´ was the sentence which broke the ice and it was also the start of an amazing show. As a great entertainer, he started the concert with the game `Turn back, turn front´ and the song `Türlich, Türlich/Word Up´. The first surprise of the evening was that `Das Bo´ sang the song with Jan Delay. The crowd was amazed about that, but their commitment was not good enough for Jan, so he started to entertain them with passion and many jokes.
The Band and the artist were dressed in colourful suits, where the colours matched the new album cover, which is presented in the funk style of the late 70’s.After a few songs you could see the big effort of his performance paid off. Jan Delay played some `oldschool´ songs, like he called them, in a funky and soul way. And it’s really refreshing to hear `Everybody´ from `The Backstreet Boys´ in this way. From this point the crowd couldn’t stop celebrating. Jan Delay and `Disko No. 1´ were not only entertaining the people with great songs, they also made a lot of jokes, puns and interactive games.
The `Chiefstyler´, like the artist is also called, dedicated a song to the `Flex´, which is a famous club in Vienna. He told the people that the Flex is one of his favourite places in Vienna and he’d love to play every concert there if it was big enough.
In the middle of the show Jan Delay started to play `MC Hammer’s´ hitsingle `U Can’T Touch This´. It was one of the highlights of the show and not only because of the `Freeze´ game. The Ladies of `Disko No. 1´ were performing this song with passion and devotion. `Delay Lama´ not only played his actual songs but also older songs like `Vergifted´, `Klar´ and a mixed version of the songs from the album `Mercedes-Dance´. During the hit `Oh Johnny´ Jan D. and the band stopped to play and left the stage. But under loud and not stopping shouts for „encore“ from the crowd they came back and fired up the show again. `Disko No. 1´ was introducing itself with small raps which were quite good and funny.
After the introduction they played one of Jan Delay’s most famous coversong `Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann´. Everyone in the hall sang with Jan who was looking at a sea of fire lighting flames.
The final encore was `Deichkind´’s `Remmi Demmi´, performed by Jan Delay, `Das BO ´and `Disko No. 1´. This song crowned the evening of a great performer. Our resume: a fantastic entertainer, a gorgeous atmosphere and a two-hour-long breathtaking show. Jan Delay, one of the best artists and greatest live acts of the present.
