Since years I have been a big fan of his photgraphy. Because they are offside the mainstream. Because they show unusual and colourful woman, sometimes beautiful and strong, sometimes vulnerable and gently. Once embedded in an imaginative setting, once taken from real life. Timo Denz, who is also behind the project Hexistenz, has been taking photographs since 1998 and we are very pleased to ask him a few questions.

Schon seit Jahren bin ich ein Riesenfan seiner Photographien. Weil sie abseits vom Mainstream sind. Weil sie ungewöhnliche und bunte Frauen zeigen, mal wunderschön und stark, mal verletzlich und behutsam. Mal eingebettet in eine fantasievolle Kulisse, mal einfach aus dem Leben gegriffen. Timo Denz, der auch hinter dem Projekt Hexistenz steckt, fotografiert seit 1998 und wir freuen uns unendlich ihm ein paar Fragen stellen zu können. 

Photography means to you…?
It is part of my life. Heart´s blood and fascination. With art and commerce, guide lines and rules, play instinct and breaking rules  jugle culture schock and the general tolerance and always try to uphold aesthetics… and to also approach well defined commissions in a balancing act and to make sure that the art and the soul don´t fall by the wayside.

Photographie ist für dich? Ein Teil meines Lebens. Herzblut und Faszination. Mit Kunst und Kommerz, Richtlinien und Regeln, Spieltrieb und Regelbruch, Kulturschock und Allgemeinverträglichkeit zu jonglieren und dabei immer zu versuchen, die Ästhetik hochzuhalten… auch klar definierte Aufträge im Spagat anzugehen, darauf zu achten, dass die Kunst und die Seele nicht auf der Strecke bleiben. Das ist schon alles sehr sehr spannend.

What do you want to capture in your pictures?
People that  embark on the game with the camera. Gestures, glances and moments that tell stories. Sometimes more, sometimes less staged, often reduced to the essentials. From the sensual diva to the angry riot girl. Thoughts, wishes, desires, anger, fun, emotional abyss… the emotions in the trigger moment should arrive at the viewer´s eyes at the end.

Was genau willst du auf deinen Fotos festhalten? Menschen, die sich auf das Spiel mit der Kamera einlassen. Gesten, Blicke und Momente, die Geschichten erzählen. Mal mehr, mal weniger inszeniert, oft aufs Wesentliche reduziert. Von der sinnlichen Diva bis zum wütenden Riot Girl. Gedanken, Wünsche, Sehnsüchte, Wut, Spaß, seelische Abgründe…. die Emotionen im Moment des Auslösens sollten am Ende beim Betrachter ankommen.

Who would you really like to have in front of your camera?
Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis und Winona Ryder in a model package of  three.  Why has none of the photographers, that don´t have a problem with the costs, done that so far?

Wen würdest du unbedingt gerne einmal vor der Kamera haben? Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis und Winona Ryder im Model-Dreierpack. Wieso hat das noch keiner der Fotografen, die sich über das ‘Thema Kosten’ hinweggesetzt haben, angegangen?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
With my partner, kids, cats, coffee machine in an industrial building with a wild garden around it. Maybe one should think about a donkey? Partly conservative, partly freaked out. To your left the city, to your right peace.

Wo siehst du dich in fünf Jahren? Mit meiner Partnerin, Kindern, Katze, Caffè-Maschine in einem Industriebau-Atelier mit wildem Garten aussenrum. Vielleicht sollte man noch über einen Esel nachdenken? Hälfte spießig, Hälfte durchgeknallt. Links die Stadt, rechts die Ruhe.

Tell me, where does your quirk for the perfect art of coffee, espressso maker- love etc come from?
My partner and the Italian in-law family bear part of the blame. However with food ( or in general with things that are important to me) I am uncompromising. And Espresso is one of my „favourite dishes“. So it was natural to drag two espresso makers for connoisseurs into the kitchen of my studio. The rest arises out of the appropriate scene by itself. I only have to be careful that I don´t miss out on the pictures… and to ask the models to get away from the cappuccino every now and again and come back to the studio!

Sag, woher kommt eigentlich dein Tick für die perfekte Kaffeekunst, Espressomaschinenliebhaberei und so? Lebensgefährtin und italienische Schwiegerfamilie tragen da sicher eine Mitschuld. Ich bin bei Lebensmitteln (oder ganz allgemein bei Sachen, die mir wichig sind) allerdings sowieso sehr kompromisslos. Und Espresso gehört zu den ‘Leibspeisen’. Es lag also irgendwie nahe, zwei Mailänder Liebhabermaschinen in die Studio-Küche zu schleppen. Der Rest ergibt sich in der entsprechenden ‘Szene’ dann automatisch. Ich muss nur etwas aufpassen, dass die Fotos nicht irgenwann noch zu kurz kommen…. und auch die Models hin und wieder weg vom Cappuccino und zurück ins Studio bitten!
