I run out of words when I try to describe exactly how much I love all the images of Akila Berjaoui. The Australian photographer´s work is truly mind-blowing and all her images bring across such a confident, natural and sexy feeling. Her work is so intoxicating, you just can’t pull yourself away! We are very pleased to ask her a few questions where she tells us about the Australian photography scene and what she wants to capture in her pictures. ♥
What´s the most fascinating thing about photography for you?
The magic that happens simply by looking thru ur lens. It always amazes me what people see, then produce and share with the world. I am constantly being inspired, bewildered and affected by other photographers.
All your images are truly beautiful and show the natural female beauty. What do you want to capture in your pictures?
I guess just that. True beauty. This is what inspires and moves me as a creative and as a woman.
What or who inspires you for your work?
There are too many to list! The beauty of Australia constantly inspires me. And the rest of the world. Travel. Nature inspires me. My friends and loved ones inspire me. Love inspires me. Cinema inspires me. Music inspires me. Bruce weber inspires me. The weather inspires my moods which in turn inspires my work.
A good picture is?
Something that tells a story. Something so captivating u cannot bear to look away.
Do you always work with the same team?
No. But i do like to work with my friends and particular models. I have my special favourites! I also like to work autonomously with the models. Less fuss, more personal imagery.
How would you describe the Australian scene (photography & fashion) if you compare it to other countries?
This is a tough one for me. I guess we are a very talented and creative nation. We see things differently i think. How? I am not so sure yet. And there is so much happening here. However I honestly believe that art and fashion isn´t as appreciated here as much as it is overseas. Theres also no money to be made here. I´ts a shame, cause everyone up’s and leave’s due to toughing it out and not reaping the benefits or rewards. The industry here makes it hard for the new, emerging artists to get anywhere. No body is willing to give the new ones a chance. It´s different os where new, young, edgey, unknown is celebrated and is seen as exciting. Here the industry is dominated by the same guys that have dominated for so many years, that do the little jobs thru to all the bigger jobs. It´s extremely boring to be honest with you. Same people same images over and over and ever again. On the plus side we have beautiful models due to Australia’s cultural diversity. This too is special and unique.
Do you have a plan for life?
Yep. Kind of. It will always involve photography I now that much. I am still trying to work that one out. I would like to explore underwater photography, cinema, movie stills. Volunteer work that involves photography and telling a different story. One that matters. A story that will help to improve the world and help to make it a better place.
The best life lesson so far?
Always trust ur gut!!!
5 things you cannot live without?
The sun, the ocean, love, my friends & family. Music!
