There is no chance we are able to break away from visually absorbing those raw, untamed, sensual and strong images by Cameron Davis, a Los Angeles based photographer. Only randomly and out of boredom he picked up his first camera – surely one of the best desicions he could make - and lucky for us, as we just can´t get enough!
What initially made you go for photography?
What initially made me get in photography is very different than most photographers. At the time, I was living out of state going to college. One summer I didn’t get the chance to come home and I was literally going bored out of my mind. The most random thought came to mind and I said to myself “I’m gonna buy a camera”. I went down to a local camera shop and bought this piece of shit Sony Alpha and from there it’s all history as they say.
A good image is…?
A good image is timeless, classic, it engages you in some kind of way; whether it be physically, emotionally, mentally. It doesn’t matter. Taking a more abstract approach you could even say that a good image is a combination of luck and opportunity coming together at that moment in front of your camera.
A good model has to?
In order to be a good model, you have to learn to how to be expressive with your face not just your body. So many models think that posing is the end all be all but what good is posing if your face looks dead? ya know what I mean. A model who can create a range of facial expressions is much more exciting to work with and it allows for more dynamic photos and to me that’s what makes a good. I tell every model I work with practice making different faces in front of the mirror and you’ll be surprised about how your work turns out going forward.
What or who are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by all kinds of things, whether they be people, places, movies I’ve seen recently, things that are happening in my life at the moment. If I had to think of any specific set of artist though, I would have to say I’m inspired by Richard Avedon, the things he did with portraits and the subjects he chose are amazing. Annie Leibovitz would be another, her ability to tell a story or set a mood is unparalleled in my opinion. Helmut Newton as well, his work in my opinion was ahead of its time but I’m thankful that he came into photography when he did because during the 1950′s there was such a stigma on owning your sexuality and women expressing themselves in that form. It advanced the field of photography on every front.
What camera are you shooting with?
I shoot with two camera’s. One being my Canon 550D or my disposable camera I get from CVS. Disposable cameras are my favorite to work with as I’m a huge film lover if you couldn’t tell from my work already.
Beauty is…?
Is all subjective to the person, what one person’s find beautiful somebody may find ugly so I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer on this. I was looking at a photographers work here recently and as I was going through his work I realized his models where extremely unique, they had these really odd features that I found quite amazing but other people thought they looked weird or strange. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
To work as a photographer in LA is…?
…is definitely difficult, well for me it is anyway. I by no means classify myself as one type of photographer or another. To me I’m just a photographer who takes pictures but I know that people in this industry say I’m a editorial photographer. LA is a very commercialized market and there is isn’t a lot of room for being really creative at least not on a big scale here. But I do enjoy the challenge of changing people’s take on how you might inject “editorial
photography” into commercialized market.
You´d love to shoot?
Oh man, this is tough because there are so many amazing models out there. I would have to say Ming Xi, Rinko Kikuchi. Lara Stone, Milla Jovovich, Saskia de Brauw, and Chanel Iman. I would fall in love with each and everyone of them (laughs).
5 things you cannot live without?
This is pretty easy, my cameras, my iPhone, oh this might be a little harder than I thought (pauses). Mmmm, the companionship of a beautiful women… what can I say women inspire me. I can’t live without my family and friends and lastly I couldn’t live without authentic mexican tacos!
