“The beauty in the wider sense is simple to describe, it is what pleases the mind, in whatever form it comes. But you can not describe the beauty of a person in an objective way, because it has too many facets, some visible, and sometimes ostentatious, others are hidden.”
Nicola Casini came a huge step further to grasp the real beauty of his models with his incredible project mymusemycamerayourface . Equipped with an analogue camera each of the girls had to capture themselves in their daily life revealing their essence, intimacy, deepness but also fears and insecurities. We find that simply wonderful and wanted to know more about it…
mymusemycamerayourface.com is a truly wonderful and interesting¬†project by you – that lasted over a year, and where girls/ models were¬†asked to sef-portrait themselves within a week¬īs time on film cameras.¬†So they had to visually describe themselves – showing the real self.¬†We love this essence of the whole idea. How did you come up with that-¬†what inspired you?
The inspiration came to me looking at the portfolio of a girl that I shooted after a casting for a fashion advertising. In my mind she was very sweet and melancholic, but his portfolio was very aggressive, very rock. I asked myself if this way of showing her was TRUE, or if she had simply interpreted my directions. From this to the whole project, the distance has been short.
So did I get that right, that those models where the ones that you had already shooted yourself at one point?
I chose 15 models whom I had worked with, whom I trusted; good friends. The project requires diligence, but is also required to show themselves psychologically-naked, you can not ask that to a stranger.
What have you and everyone else learned from the project?
I learned that there is a big difference between the model played by the girl and the girl herself. The beauty is not objective, it is interpretation, and that you may not know, or to judge, a girl based on her photo. Each model has her own identity and it is difficult to grasp, but when you do, the photos will be the most ‘beautiful and satisfying you can get, just because they represent the true essence of the person.
What where the biggest surprises for the participating girls and for¬†you? Did some of them find out something about themselves that they¬†didn¬īt even know themselves?
As I said, the biggest surprise was to find that models that I thought I had framed, in fact they were far from it. Many of them felt almost frightened by what they had done, just because, not being able to immediately see their pictures, but just a few months later, they had the feeling of having shown their intimacy, their deepness and truth, with all their fears and insecurities and desires that you would hardly tell to someone, not even to a friend.
So after all this – how do you perceive and describe beauty?
The beauty in the wider sense is simple to describe, it is what pleases the mind, in whatever form it comes. But you can not describe the beauty of a person in an objective way, because it has too many facets, some visible, and sometimes ostentatious, others are hidden. You can interpret but not understand or describe the whole, in all its nuances. Simple.
