Founded in the early 80s in order to make a platform for sonic experiments. After the falling down of the Wall it closed down though. In 2013 after a long break it was finally being resurrected. That’s a short history of one of the most remarkable upcoming events of this year – Berlin’s Atonal festival.

In 1982 Dimitri Hegemann started something very imporant for the music & art scene of that days. Originally held at 2036 in Kreuzberg, Atonal reflected revolutionary and innovative musical acts like Psychic TV, Einstürzende Neubauten, 808 State and others. The concept of Atonal represented a place for crossing all boundaries and the option of just fully expressing artists feelings. After shutting down the festival, Hegemann moved on and started another important thing for Berlin scene – the legendary Tresor club.

In 2013 Berlin Atonal will be relaunched again by Hegemann and he also decided on a new location. The festival’s new venue is going to be an abandoned powerplant in central Berlin – Kraftwerk (not that band). And there you can find 6 days of world-class musical events, large audio-visual installations, seminars, master-classes, workshops, streetfood & bar as well as artist’s installations and exhibitions. Since the Atonal is so special, also the artist’s performances will be special – Jon Hassell will perform with string quarted and attendants can also look forward to Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald who will present their collaboration “Borderland”. For other performing artists special A/V shows are granted. The basic aim of the Atonal is to resist established patterns or mainstream, be different and express yourself fully. We are definitely looking forward to this one!
