Interview with Igor Termenón

Photography

“I’m always looking for the perfect light and I love contemplating how light can make things much more beautiful.” tells us Igor Termenón, a Spanish but Edinburgh based photographer, who we admire for his rebellious, natural and cool style. So we asked him about his passion, wether he is a perfectionist and what he still dreams about…

Well, I am at Starbucks right now… do you want something?

I’m not really a coffee person, although I must admit that I’ve started drinking this Starbucks cold coffee they sell at the supermarket and I like it, maybe because it doesn’t really taste like coffee.

Where does your passion for photography come from?

I was always interested in fashion magazines and when I was younger I remember keeping all the catalogues from the shops in my hometown and browsing the pages when I was bored. I guess that’s what made me interested in photography, but I didn’t start shooting until I was 20-21 years old.

How do you see photography industry at this point of “crisis”?

It’s definitely hard to make money from photography, although I think it’s always been –more or less- this way. I think the main problem is that most of the times we´re used to do things for free and it seems normal.

Leaving Spain behind was difficult or Edinburgh compensated all the nostalgia (or in Portuguese “saudade”)?

Leaving Spain wasn’t difficult at all, in fact, it was quite exciting! I first lived in the UK when I was still studying my degree in Spain and moved to Glasgow to spend my Erasmus year there. After that, I returned to Spain for another year and then moved to Liverpool and last year in September I took a train and ended up in Edinburgh.

Girls on Film Zine was a dream came true… How many dreams do you have?

I guess lots, like everyone else! I really want Girls on Film to become bigger, for example. And I wish I could make money just by taking photographs, which, of course is not happening right now haha!

Can you imagine doing something in your life without being a photograpgher?

I do lots of different things that are not photography, but photography is now an essential part of my life. I need to shoot regularly and I’m also always working on photography related projects.

You are the type of photographer that always thinks about achieving perfection?

Not really. I’m really relaxed when I’m shooting and I’ve never taken it too seriously. When I shoot fashion, for example, I want everything to be really chilled out and don’t like when people in the team are rushing or being over perfectionist.

You can’t take your eyes of what?

Of light. I’m always looking for the perfect light (maybe I’m perfectionist here) and I love contemplating how light can make things much more beautiful.

Your mind works like a analogue tape or your eyes are digital?

I think they’re analogue right now. When I started taking photos I used a digital camera but right now I mainly use film cameras, so for me it’s much easier to create an idea in my mind of how the photo is going to look like in an analogue format. - “I’m living my portraits…” Right now I want to go on being involved in fashion photography but at the same time develop more the personal side of my work. In the future I see myself still doing things related to photography, hopefully!
