“I spent the morning photographing tech guys for a start up. One strobe, a white seamless, and the countless repetition of “turn, smile, chin up, beautiful…” Afterwards I got in a car and drove to Iskra’s. We had never met in person but corresponding via email for a prolonged amount of time can make you feel like you know someone even if you don’t. She opened the door and hugged me like I was an old friend she hadn’t seen in years. It was extremely disarming and I immediately felt my hardened New York shell crumble to the floor. For the next 3 hours, we were old friends, catching up but at the same time getting to know each other. That’s the coolest thing about this job and this city. You never know who you’re going to meet or the impact they’ll have on your life. The next day I sent her some of the photos. I was curious to see what she’d think of the images because it was so different than her commercial work. What she said is the reason I ever wanted to take photos in the first place: “You have shot me in a way no one else has I’m beyond happy thank you thank you thank you.” We haven’t seen each other since, New York schedules being what they are. But I’m fairly certain that the next time we do, it’ll be like not a day has passed.” Atisha Paulson.
