Ahead of the release of his EP tomorrow, Christopher Port drops his first fashion line and shares beautiful new video alongside. Featuring the forthcoming music, the result is hauntingly beautiful. 5 minutes and 25 seconds pure goose bumps, delicate and deeply.

“This video is a process film, by that I mean this film shows the creation of clothing prototypes that served as the basis for the final design of the top. The black top and pants in all the photo’s attached were made by me, everything except the leather jacket. The initial design of the top informed what the final top for sale actually looks like. In short, this is the visual representation of me creating the music and me creating the clothes.”

You recently moved from Melbourne to London – what prompted the move? Why London?

The move to London wasn’t a permanent one. I’ve been here a few months now, going to shows, buying lots of records and just generally getting inspired by the city and the people. The whole tempo of London has been amazing to be around, especially around Hackney, which is where I’ve spent most of my time.

Is that where you wrote your upcoming EP Everything in Quotes “Dark”?

I wrote the “Dark” EP back in Australia, but I’ve been writing a lot each day while in London. I’ve been walking around the city in the mornings and working on tracks in the afternoon. I luckily caught the tail end of the London summer which has given a real lightness and energy to the kind of tracks I’ve been making, tracks that will probably make it on to my next release.

How would you describe your music to someone that hasn’t heard it before?

Club music with an emphasis on emotions. Sad, happy, dark, light & in between.

“The whole tempo of London has been amazing to be around, especially around Hackney, which is where I’ve spent most of my time.”

You have launched a clothing line today, can you tell us a bit more about that and why you decided to embark on this project?

Yeah it’s super exciting, I’ve been making clothes for quite a while now but never thought I’d be able to do something like this. I was kind of nervous stepping into the fashion world but everyone at Pieater & Future Classic has been really supportive. My mother taught me how to sew but I’m self taught when it comes to pattern making and designing, so fortunately my girlfriend studied fashion at school and helped fix a lot of my mistakes.

I wanted to make some “Merch” but didn’t want to just get my name printed on a t-shirt because that felt weird. So I decided I wanted to design and make some tops myself from scratch. Each of the designs draw a direct influence from the music on the EP. They are my first Fall/Winter 2018 collection. I’m aiming to incorporate some trousers/shorts into my next collection, but for now it’s just the tops.

How important is fashion to you?

Fashion has been a massive source of inspiration for years. Some of my favorite designers like Raf Simmons, Virgil Abloh & Demna Gvasalia constantly create new silhouettes and use new fabrics to convey their design aesthetic each season. My favorite artists in any field always have an eclecticism about their work and for me fashion is one of the most eclectic art forms around at the moment.

What similarities do you see between the art of making a record and that of designing clothes?

I think with both art forms the individual tracks/pieces of an album/collection need to be strong on their own, but also make sense as a whole. My favorite records are the ones that have a strong emotional thread through each track, yet come together as a whole. The same goes for my favorite collections.

What was the most challenging thing about this process that you found?

The most challenging thing about this process has been refining and finishing the clothes to a high standard. I’ve made/altered lots of clothes for myself and my friends to wear but had no idea how to finish a garment from scratch so that it was clean and refined. I took me a while to learn the best way of doing things.

What can we expect from you in the future? More music or more clothes?

Both! I’m currently finishing off my next EP which will be called Everything in Quotes “Light” a follow up to the “Dark” EP that’s out on the 20th October. This will also be accompanied by a “Light” collection of clothes.
