A talk with Danish pop young-blood Ea Kaya

“Being young is both exciting and frightening. Almost anything is possible these days and so little is predictable.”

We simply love the positive and colourful vibe of Ea Kaya´s latest video release Remedy, directed by Tom Mckenzie, despite dealing with the story of an unhealthy relationship, the use of bold, bright colours and young dancers makes you realize the power of youth and that everything is going to fine. We had a small chat with the young Danish pop artist about being in love with the wrong person, the best things about being young and her goals for 2018.

The song is about an unhealthy relationship – is it one of your personal experiences?

It’s very unusual, but this song is actually built up around a theme – not a concrete experience of mine. It’s an extremely relatable scenario though, and I can definitely recognize myself in parts of the story. Love is an addiction and it makes you do idiotic things. I’ve got friends that are in the exact position of these lyrics, but luckily I’ve never gotten that far out myself.

What’s the remedy if we are in love with the wrong person?

Oh, this is a tough one. You can’t control who you get feelings for. The only thing that’s ever worked for me, is to keep yourself busy. Hang out with your friends as much as possible, cultivate your passion, go for a run – anything to distract yourself. Also delete or unfollow that person everywhere and don’t talk to him/her at all.

What brought you to music and do you play an instrument?

My mom’s side of the family is very musical and I’ve been lucky to have a natural ear for melodies. I realised I could sing when I was 9 years old, mumbling ‘Everytime’ by Britney Spears at a karaoke party. Two years later, my school hosted a songwriting competition. We were three competing, but hey, I won – and wrote my first song. Around that time I began following a ton of the early YouTube stars, and I was inspired to pick up a guitar soon after.

Where can we usually find you on a Friday night?

Honestly, I’d love to sound wild and young, but I must admit I’ve become a grandma inside this past year or so. I’ve had a billion sessions, often on the weekends. And if I have a session at 10 AM on a Saturday, I’m not going out until 5 AM Friday. I’ll sound like a craw the next day and I’ll have zero brain activity. On nights like that, I’ll probably be at a friend’s place, eating all their snacks. I do go to a decent amount of concerts, though. Concerts can be a bit pricy, but I try to go to as many as possible.

What’s the best thing about being young?

Being young is both exciting and frightening. You can do whatever you want with your life. Unless you’ve already bought yourself a farm and a ring for your high school sweetheart, you’ve got no boundaries. You can take a one-way ticket to Bali with a one-night stand from Tinder. Pause “Grey’s Anatomy” and actually pursue a doctor’s degree yourself. Almost anything is possible these days and so little is predictable.

Your goals for next year?

This year I’ve focused on writing. I’ve got a whole bunch of material now and 2018 will be all about finding the right team for my music, getting my songs produced – and of course playing them live. In one sentence; I want to release an EP and play my first headline show.
