“Embrace your flaws, love yourself appropriately, and walk around with your chin held high” A talk with Salem Mitchell

“In my opinion life is not really a stage because usually when you think about performing on a stage there´s an audience and critics and people you want to impress and you shouldn’t focus on impressing others or putting on a good show.”

17-year-young San Diego based Salem Mitchell, enchants us with her tumblr blog, her supercute freckles and her wise words about what defines her, the ability to laugh at yourself and future plans she only reveals to her best friend.

How would you describe yourself?

I would describe myself as an extremely bubbly and goofy person, I’m always joking around or laughing at something that most likely isn’t as funny as I make it seem.

What are your origins?

I’m African-American and Filipino!

Beauty means?

To me confidence is beauty, if you embrace your flaws, love yourself appropriately, and walk around with your chin held high you’re beautiful.

On your tumblr site you wrote “Don’t compare yourself to other people”. Why do you think so many people need to be better than anyone else?

People most likely feel the need to compare themselves to others because of the way society highlights specific traits more than others, its more often you’ll see a really skinny girl (not to shame) on the cover of a magazine that´s sold all of over the world and then everyone who sees it begins to think “this is the look that people want to see that’s why it’s everywhere, I need to look like her or him!”

“Some people may know me as the girl who looks like a banana but I’m here to let you know that the banana’s look like me.”

What do you love most about yourself?

I love my ability to laugh at myself, I’m super clumsy and so if I fall in public I’m the first one to bust out laughing or if someone is making fun of me based on my appearance I’ll laugh with them because at the end of the day I know my worth it’s not going to hurt me to let people have a little laugh.

You live in San Diego. Where can we meet you on a Friday night?

I’m usually having sleepovers with some of my best friends or just driving around with my friends honestly, we never really have a destination or a main place we just try to get out some how.

Tattoos?

No I just turned 17 so no tattoos right now and I don’t see myself getting any tattoos in the future either.

Is life a stage?

In my opinion it’s not really a stage because usually when you think about performing on a stage there´s an audience and critics and people you want to impress and you shouldn’t focus on impressing others or putting on a good show. You should just focus on living for yourself and becoming satisfied with who you are and what you’re achieving.

What defines who you are?

I don’t really think anything specifically defines me, there are things that contribute to making me who I am but not one thing.

What’s hard about life?

I think one of the hardest parts about life is realizing that there are so many other people in this world, as soon as you start to feel important you realize there are 7 billion other people here, you’re basically just one strand in a full head of hair.

Facebook or Instagram?

My Facebook is only for close friends and family but my Instagram is @salemmitchell.

A secret you only tell your best girl friend?

My best friend Cheyenne and I really enjoy going into details about what we have planned for our future, I never really talk to anyone about that except her.

Your favorite song for this week?

My favorite song for the past few months actually has been Wednesday Night Interlude by PARTYNEXTDOOR.

You have already answered tons of questions on your tumblr site. Which question we should have asked you?

You guys covered everything except maybe what artists I’m into or what genre I’m primarily into!
– which by the way if you want to know I really like r&b/rap and my favorite artists are PARTYNEXTDOOR, Jacquees, Drake, Beyoncé, Big Sean, etc.

Most important things in life?

Love, Happiness, and Money.

Hello from my planet! I love nature, freedom, dancing, traveling, music, reading, chilling, cats and the woods. What makes me happy is healthy food, a good night out, long walks in the forest and getting lost in the sound of nature.
