Already after the first sounds of Donkey Kid‘s new song Toy you feel transported back to the “good old” days. A mixture of the 80’s and 90’s we would say, when clothes were somehow still a bit more casual, the music scene was not yet thoroughly professionalized, and social media had not yet come to life.
The 19-year-old artist is definitely a talent. A real Berlin city boy, but with the carefree refreshing lightness of a country kid. Also the video – directed by Niklas Apfel and Jurek Stricker – transports this feeling. Without high gloss scenes we follow him cruising through the city on a scooter.
One could almost become a bit wistful because of the memories that are awakened here. The times when you stuck blades of grass between your teeth to chew the bitter taste of it or roared through the streets on a moped to take in life at a higher speed. But nevertheless there is no reason to become nostalgic here, too harmonious are the sounds and the melody, too cool the guitar riffs and too easy going the sound of his vocals. ““Toy” is about the suspicious, slightly truculent mood of “If you’re playing with me, I’m out”.”
