Picture an endless, vast landscape stretching out under an open sky. Your chest feels heavy, your mind wanders across past memories, and the sharp sting of heartbreak still grips you tightly. Yet beneath the weight of that longing, a gentle spark begins to take hold—a surge of hope telling that life moves forward, and something striking still awaits down the road.
This cinematic imagery springs instantly to life in “Heaven Was His Name,” the new single from Margate-based artist Lo Barnes.
Running nearly six minutes, the track carries a rich, widescreen intensity—a blend of Western melancholy, raw emotion, and exquisite restraint. The opening moments leave ample space for Barnes’ haunting voice to untangle a tale of betrayal and disillusionment.
Speaking about the track and its video, Lo Barnes shares: “I wrote this song as though it was the opening credits to a film about my own heartbreak. Set in a desert-expanse, a lonely figure grappling with betrayal. Nature was a crucial element in the video, a force far beyond our control. Sometimes all we can do is accept our own story.”
And perhaps there is a lot of truth in those last words. In life, it’s not always easy to say what is right or wrong, or whether there even is such a thing. But accepting our own story feels like one of those things we can hardly argue with. Of course, acceptance doesn’t mean we cannot change things or choose a different path. But heartbreak is something most of us will experience at some point. And sometimes, there is simply no way around the pain. We have to walk through it. Which makes it all the more beautiful that Lo Barnes has turned her own heartbreak into something so moving, and chosen to share it with us.
For listeners stepping into her world for the first time, Lo Barnes bridges intimate folk, atmospheric rock, and 1960s nostalgia. Her debut EP Never Hurt Again earned a spot on BBC Introducing’s Best of 2023 list, and she has shared stages with artists such as Jesse Jo Stark, The Wave Pictures, and The Libertines. “Heaven Was His Name” serves as the second single from her upcoming project HEAVEN, a trilogy of EPs exploring disillusionment, heartbreak, and feminine defiance. The first chapter, The Veil, arrives on December 10, 2026.
