The city is hers

She walks trough the commonly busy city streets, but today it feels like the place is all hers. Mahi Kabra of IMG Models tells her own story while being surrounded by new tall buildings and old statues that tell their own stories. Alternating between colour and black and white, photographer Dina Gad manages to achieve a gripping and varied photo series, with a hint of nostalgia and a young, strong woman embodied by model Mahi. “I don’t usually provide any guidance into what my photographs mean and feel that if I did, it would rob the audience of the opportunity to have their own unique and unbiased experience with the work. However, that is not the case this time. Ever since moving to New York, I’ve been soaking in everything it has to offer, satiating my child-like curiosity everyday. The people in particular capture my attention the most and I often find myself thinking about everyones individually unique life. Somewhere, someone is pouring coffee in a hotel lobby thinking about how excited he is to roam through the streets for the first time, someone else is running down the stairs to catch the subway to be on time to his first day at a new job, someone else is sitting in their tiny apartment overlooking manhattan with freshly brewed coffee in their hand contemplating what they wanna do with the rest of their life, and someone else is waiting for a train at Union Square to get lunch with he girl he is breaking up with. Every person in this crazy city has a story and a place to be. As a photographer, I try to translate whatever I see and feel in my internal world and its relationship with the external world into the language of my visual work. I felt inspired specifically by the dating life here and wanted to capture a story where a young woman waits for a potential lover in the city for a first date and gets stood up as he never shows up.” Dina Gad
