Meny, congratulations on your first single, “Hooked.” Could you tell us more about how you got started in music?*

Thank you. Initially, I aspired to be a concept artist or an animator, with a deep love for drawing and storytelling. However, music held a special place in my heart too. In the wake of the pandemic and a personal upheaval, I decided to pursue music seriously. I was fortunate to connect with producer Nimrod Friedrich, which kickstarted my journey in crafting my songs.

You’re based in Tel Aviv. In what ways would you say the city influences you as a person?

Absolutely. I grew up in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv. Yet, I’ve always considered Tel Aviv my true home. Upon collaborating with Nimrod, I relocated to Tel Aviv. I cherished the late-night walks from the studio to my apartment. The city’s dynamic pace and vibrant energy resonate with my spirit and give me a sense of freedom.

The lyrics of “Hooked” speak to some heavy emotions and experiences, particularly around childhood trauma and self-degradation. Can you tell us more about the message you wanted to convey with this song?

With “Hooked,” I wanted to express the intricacies of addiction, self-awareness, and self-destructive tendencies. It reflects on a personal, traumatic experience. It took me a while to understand how my childhood trauma was influencing my decisions. However, this song transcends my personal narrative, standing as a mirror to anyone’s addictive behavior.

“My deepest wish is that the song might provide them with new insights about themselves and open up fresh perspectives.”

You’ve mentioned giving insights into every new single you release. How important do you think it is for artists to share the meanings and personal experiences behind their work?

It really depends on the artist. When an artist bares their soul through their songs, it’s already revealing enough. As for me, I strive to offer more context to my songs. This approach fosters self-acceptance and instills pride in who I am.

You not only created the song but also the cover art. Can you describe the creative journey that led you to the unique and striking design of an Anglerfish and your face?

My creative process is flexible. For this piece, I aimed to visually depict the enthralling yet deceptive nature of something that appears beautiful. The vision of juxtaposing an anglerfish with my face was clear in my mind. It was just a matter of executing it. I began with several small pen and pencil sketches before transitioning to digital painting.

How do you feel your art skills complement your music? Is this something we can expect to see more of in your future releases?

Yes, absolutely. My upcoming two singles will also feature my artwork on the cover. My art skills enhance my music as they provide an additional platform for self-expression. Being an eclectic individual, I relish exploring various ideas and art forms. I aspire to blend and experiment with art, music, and fashion in every possible way.

“The city’s dynamic pace and vibrant energy resonate with my spirit and give me a sense of freedom.”

What are your plans for your next single? Will there be similar themes, or are you planning to explore different topics?

My next single is a continuation of the introspective theme presented in ‘Hooked.’ While ‘Hooked’ delves into addictive behaviors, my upcoming single, ‘Show,’ explores social anxiety and how performance and showmanship serve as a counterbalance.

Where might we find you on a Friday night?

You’re most likely to find me at home, indulging in some junk food while enjoying reality TV shows.

Finally, what do you hope listeners will feel or think as they listen to “Hooked”?

I hope listeners enjoy the experience of listening to “Hooked.” My deepest wish is that the song might provide them with new insights about themselves and open up fresh perspectives.
