The longest night of the year carries an air of mystery. It’s a time of magic and wonder, when we stand on the cusp of something new.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, our days have been getting longer for a little while now (thankfully). But a few weeks ago, we lingered in that quiet in-between time, suspended between the shortening and lengthening of days.
Model Kayla Ellsworth and photographer Dustin Scott Martin did not set out to shoot on the shortest day of the year on purpose, but when their schedules lined up over the holidays, they seized the opportunity to collaborate. “It was a chilly December night,” says Dustin. “But inside, the apartment was cozy, and we jumped at the challenge of exploring the moods and tones we could create with the available light and darkness.”
Perhaps we can hope that luck arrives the way an ace does – unexpectedly and exactly when it’s needed.
