Pulling The Fool from a tarot deck is always a small conversation with fate. The card depicts a figure balanced right at the edge of a cliff, gaze fixed on the sky, a single white rose in hand, about to step off into the abyss. There is no calculation in that movement, no net — only the sublime, terrifying madness of trusting the unwritten.
It is a fascination with those rare, weightless seconds in human nature where reason surrenders to raw instinct, and curiosity overrides every demand of caution. Before we know where a path leads, before doubt has time to set in, there is only the leap.
It is this exact frequency — the thrilling space between innocence, audacity, and the absolute unknown — that powers “fool”, the intoxicating new single by Montreal-born, Portugal-based singer-songwriter mokina, which we are happy to premiere today on C-Heads alongside an exclusive visual showcase.
Inspired by the Fool card in tarot, the song circles around the very beginning of a relationship: that almost weightless stage when everything still feels possible and vulnerability becomes part of the thrill. The Fool traditionally marks a new journey, a willingness to leave familiar ground behind without knowing exactly where the road will end.
“Sometimes the bravest thing is simply to begin,” mokina says.
And “fool” carries precisely that feeling. There is tenderness in it, but also the slight suspension of reality that often accompanies falling for someone — when intuition takes over and, for a little while, we allow ourselves not to know what comes next. The song itself feels soft and full of surrender, warm and sensual in an effortless way — almost like a summer rain.
The track is the first glimpse of mokina’s forthcoming debut album, Jardim Celeste, and reunites her with longtime collaborator and producer Jeremy Lachance. Interestingly, it was not initially the obvious choice for a first single. “I’m always surprised by what happens when Jeremy and I get in the studio with a two chord progression. The demo of this song was, in my opinion, one of the least convincing of the record and somehow it is coming out as the single. I’m so grateful to be able to work with a team of creatives who bring my ideas to life, both sonically and visually.”
That same trust carried into the visual world surrounding “fool”. Created together with cinematographer Magda Benda, photographer and assistant cinematographer Denize Egger, and dancer and stylist Sofia Flemantino, the project grew from limited time and almost no budget — but from a shared willingness to follow an idea wherever it wanted to go.
The video is especially compelling in the way Sofia seems to surrender completely to the movement. There is something deeply absorbing about watching her: at once sensual, vulnerable and strong, fully inside her own element rather than simply performing for the camera. Her body seems to follow the same instinct as the music itself — giving in, leaning forward, allowing uncertainty and desire to coexist.
“I’ve come to a point in my creative career where I only want to work with people who are completely onboard with my delulu ideas and who support making them come true or making them even better. It was such a dream to work with the girls (Magda, Sofi and Denize) on this project, we had little time, we had basically no budget, but we were all on the same page and we dove in head first. I still vividly remember, when talking about the white rose as a fool imagery, Sofi casually and fiercely proclaiming: ‘let’s set it on fire!’ And so it was.”
Sometimes the most beautiful things start exactly there — in the slightly foolish decision to believe in an idea, another person, or a feeling before we have any proof of where it might take us.
