“Photography is a safe place for me to make my own rules and break them” The work of Fiona O’Hanlon

All eyes on Fiona O’Hanlon! The talented Southern California based photographer is another pearl of those fantastic young emerging and super skilled photographers.

“I think photography is a really amazing outlet for people to express themselves. An art form where there are no rules or boundaries. It’s whatever you want it to be. I’ve never been good at staying in the lines, or following rules, so photography is a safe place for me to make my own rules and break them just so I can make new ones.” she tells us. Fiona started photography about 5 years ago and started taking it seriously last year. “My dad traveled the world when he was young and documented the essence of the places and people he visited. All his photos he’s taken are in drawers and photo albums in our house. I think one day I was looking for something and stumbled upon the photos he took abroad and I fell in love with the way everything was captured. There was a raw emotion in the images that I felt, and that made me want to do that myself.” she talks about her beginnings.

“There is no perfect photo. I can sit here and write about composition, lighting, rule of thirds, and post processing, but at the end of the day, everyone’s eye is different. We all see and interpret things differently, so naturally, everyone´s photos will be different. And I love that facet. I could fall in love with an image and call it ‘perfect’ but one of my friends could go to the same location with the same model and come up with something completely different, but it is their version of ‘perfect’.”

Fiona wants to capture moments. “If time traveling were to be invented, I wouldn’t go back and change anything, but I would love to re-live some moments. That’s what photos are to me. It is frozen capsules of time that you can hold onto forever. I want to provoke emotions with the photos I take. The people looking at my photos weren’t there for the pictures and wouldn’t know the back story behind them, but they might have experienced something similar. I want people to feel nostalgic for moments that they haven’t experienced

Hello from my planet! I love nature, freedom, dancing, traveling, music, reading, chilling, cats and the woods. What makes me happy is healthy food, a good night out, long walks in the forest and getting lost in the sound of nature.
