River’s ‘Inappropriate’ is an alluring ode to renewal

An ending is not the end. It’s just the beginning of something else. Often just a smooth transition, sometimes a painful quick cut. That’s basically what the debut song of the Hamburg based, California-bred duo River is about. “It’s about not letting yourself get dragged down only because life doesn’t play by your rules.” And even if it is not always true that everything new is better than the old, or that letting go (whatever it is) is sometimes wreckful and painful, it is often a liberation and the feeling of being in the flow of life. And this means constant change. That’s the way things are.

While ‘Inappropriate’ is an extremely well-composed song that covers you like a warm blanket we also could not have imagined a better video here. Directed by Jarred Figgins this is a small masterpiece of sound and visual. The camera swings over the coastal landscape, Emma’s ash blonde hair blows in the wind, and the scences of driving somewhere lets you enjoy the feeling of “the moment”. Maybe just the right thing to see the opportunity in an ending after all. As they explain: “This song is like traveling back in time to when we were still kids living each day to the fullest, not a care in the world. Not taking life and ourselves too seriously can be a lot harder than expected but with just the right bit of distance it’s a lot less drama than you think.”
