“Lovers and Acquaintances” is a photographic series developed by Michaela Mira Plesner, spanning from October 2022 to the end of August 2023. Focusing exclusively on film, she captured the essence of natural beauty and intimacy, documenting solely female subjects.
Michaela Mira Plesner, a 20-year-old photographer from Israel, explores through her complex and beautiful relationship with women through her lens. Plesner’s work is deeply personal, exploring themes of identity, intimacy, and the nuanced dynamics of her relationships.
“I like to think of myself as a very independent person, which is why this dependency on women has always intrigued me.”
She openly reflects on her interactions and connections with women, stating, “I think my relationship to women is complicated and beautiful.” This acknowledgment of complexity and beauty highlights the depth of her personal and artistic exploration. Further delving into her experiences, Plesner shares, “I always joke with my friends about me saying ‘I need a woman to do that for me, I need a woman to control my life’.” This quote points out her reflective approach to understanding her dependencies and independence.
Growing up in a small town near Tel Aviv, Michaela Mira enjoyed the freedom to explore her bisexuality openly, attributing her fearless approach to dating to the liberal upbringing that encouraged her belief in the possibility of achieving anything she set her mind to. The series “Lovers and Acquaintances” became a journey of ongoing sessions capturing the intimate moments of her lovers and friends. These sessions, ranging from beachside shoots in Israel to more personal spaces like the subjects’ or Plesner’s own room, are cherished memories, and also offers a deeper understanding of her identity and the influential role women play in her life.
