“Where it all began.” A 9-year-old girl sits in front of the drums with a blissful smile and plays her first beats. That’s the first Instagram post of Philine Sonny, now 20. A decade has passed since then, bringing many changes. And amongst other things the thoughtful debut single called “Lose Yourself.”
The single is about how depression changes and affects your life, a creeping process that digs deeper and deeper into your everyday life. And even though musicians have addressed this topic a lot more lately, it still shouldn’t be off the table. Once depression affect you, the way back can be very hard and writing about it (as well as listening to it) has something very healing. The world still has too little space for the “not so beautiful” sides and perhaps also as a whole far too little solutions to change it. Life is a journey that is sometimes difficult and raises questions for which there are sometimes only insufficiently satisfying answers.
And nevertheless hope resonates in the song which is catchy in a beautiful and unagitated way. Likewise the video convinces with a beautiful black and white aesthetics, revealing scenes of mental struggles in a relatable, outspoken way however ending with the ray of hope to overcome it.
