Since her debut in March, Manchester’s Nellie Charles is off to a fast start. The R&B artist has already seen her fair share of media attention and performed live for audiences from Glastonbury to the BBC. Her latest offering comes in the form of “Who Is She,” a breezy and soulful jazz pop tune that undoubtedly pulls from her cited influences – from Amy Winehouse to Marvin Gaye.
It’s a deeply organic record too. Her vocal – which is quite non-compressed by today’s standards – sits squarely atop a mix backstopped by real drums, warm bass guitar, and smooth vocal harmonies. As autumn rolls in, the track marks Charles’ fourth release of the year already. And it’s imaginable that the Brit’s likely got one or two more in the chamber.

“Who is she does exactly what it says on the tin. It asks the question of a supposed partner, who the hell is this other woman you’re messing with. Why are you messing me around and do you think I’m gonna put up with this shit. A song that unfortunately many women will be able to relate to.”
