“I am sad when people forget what fun and good times of life are. Too focused on material things, status quo and the “rules” of society. Put your phone down and go outside already!”

We absolutely can feel the work and thoughts by the Southern California based photographer Brooke Frederick. Watching her images is like taking part of a massive party, a rough voyage or like sunbathing all day long. Squirted with the bloom of the youth and with eyes to go over somebodys head.

When did you start photography?
I started in High School, I was probably 15-16 years old.

Describe your work in 5 words
Intense, Shitty, Funny, Adventurous, Curious

A beautiful image is?
Capturing the perfect moment.

You released a book called „My Life Is Profane“. We are curious – what is the inspiration behind the title?
That  book is a collection of my photos from Russia…after I put the whole book together I was having a hard time finding a title that fit, so I studied every picture to see if I could find any good ideas. In the photo on the cover the man has a tattoo on belly that says “My Life is Profane”…and I was sold. Little details and happy accidents like that show up in my work a lot.

You lived in Berlin for a while. What have you taken with you from that time?
Berlin, was a big life-changer for me. I found a muse there, Gretchen Ross, and we had a lot of fun working together. The terrain of the city was so much different then what I was used to (Southern California), so I was very curious and adventurous about exploring as much as possible. There are so many young designers and artists there, and they were all very welcoming and helpful to me. There is a great movement happening with the
younger generation that isn’t happening anywhere else.

All your images show fun and the good times of life. Is there something that makes you sad sometimes?
Ha I like this question. YES, I am sad when people forget what fun and good times of life are. Too focused on material things, status quo, the “rules” of society, etc.. Put your phone down and go outside already!

Lots of your work is also very sexy – what fascinates you about the naked female body?
I really like the element of surprise and controversy a naked woman can bring into almost any photo. I think the women’s body is beautiful and timeless, I don’t want a lot of my photos to have a time period attached to them.

Do you think there is a difference between your work as a female artist compared to the male photographers?
Ummm I think so (not comparing myself to ALL male artists, but definitely some). A lot of my subjects are my friends, and that helps a lot because we can really trust each other. Besides shooting women and nudes, being a women does help me get into (or get out of) weird situations sometimes haha.

There is also a series that you call “Everything’s Fine” which contains some images that gives the viewer food for thought. Is there anything where you would draw the line and you would not photograph it at all?
I’m still figuring that out as I go… I’ve seen a lot of weird/fucked-up shit, some of which I haven’t even shown anyone. Time and Wisdom helps me decide as I go.

The most important thing in life?
Doing what you love.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
Traveling the world, falling in love, making enough money to get by, riding a horse and/or motorcycle.

Hello from my planet! I love nature, freedom, dancing, music, my family, reading, chilling, cats and the woods. What makes me happy is healthy food, a good night out, long walks in the forest with my boyfriend and getting lost in the sound of nature.
