“Since I first went to Italy, it has been difficult for me to describe what I felt. All I know is that now it feels a must to go there at least once a year, wherever in the country, but most of the time, somewhere by the sea. Very quickly on my trips, I had the chance to encounter this very special place. Instagram wasn’t as popular at the time, and it was still a little secret well kept by the locals.
In the middle of the countryside, out of nowhere, it felt a bit surreal to bathe in this natural hot spring with its incredibly hot waterfall and spectacular thermal pools. Legend says that the spring flows in the place where the lightning cast by Jupiter hit during the encounter with Saturn. Geologists, on the other hand, argue that rainwater is heated underground by the extinct volcano of Monte Amiata. The truth might as well be somewhere in between.
So, year after year, I always found an excuse to get back there every time my itinerary brought me more or less close to it. I thus saw it getting more and more crowded too, now there are even buses full of tourists getting there. However, at the end of our 12 days shooting trip in Puglia with Sarah, I knew we would stop there on the way back.
I didn’t tell her anything, only that we needed to wake up at 5 am. I wanted to keep the surprise total, so she could feel the same feeling I had the first time I discovered this place. I knew from experience that going there before sunrise, there wouldn’t be anyone, and we could have this wonder for ourselves. And I loved seeing her be amazed, graciously walking in the curls of water vapor, bathing in the pools, getting massaged by the hot current or strong waterfall, feeling a very precious and strong connection with nature, experiencing how our planet is magical.”
